Water is at the origin of the creation of our world. A source of life, it travels, is sublime and shapes its environment. It fascinates Man and inspires joy, desire, praise, curiosity or fear.
Writers, poets and artists have always celebrated the beauty and power of water. In ancient times, water was a divine, fertile space and a source of wealth. In medieval times it was also a symbol of purification and rebirth through the Judeo-Christian tradition. The advent of allegorical painting during the Renaissance made water a personified element, but also a feminine attribute of virginity and fertility.
A real artistic subject from the moment the notion of landscape took root in people's minds from the 16th century onwards and continuously until the 19th century, the evolution of the representation of water was marked by the tastes of the time and the different motifs and media used. The gradual emulation of landscape art gave rise to great creations, and maritime or river scenes did not escape the multiplication of subjects: figuration of boats, representation of the coastline, economic or leisure activities, etc.
This exhibition invites you to contemplate nearly five centuries of landscape art history. It offers a journey of colour and light through landscapes that magnify water, from rivers to the sea or ocean!
Nearly 50 works from museums in the region: Varzy, Clamecy, Sens, Dijon, Chalon-sur-Saône... or further afield: Nemours, Châteauroux, Charlieu, Sceaux, Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, Loches, Orléans... are brought together for the occasion, among which are in particular works signed by Albert Marquet, Eugène Boudin or Maximilien Luce below...
Numerous events are organised around the exhibition: conferences, demonstrations, workshop visits for schools, guided tours for groups. You can find the full programme and all the information in the different sections of our website.
